Nurturing talent in Vietnam

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture in Vietnam hosted the final round of the Archicad BIM competition on June 24, 2016. The winner was Team “345”. The competition was established in 2014, and is organized by GRAPHISOFT Japan and Ho Chin Minh City University. It is sponsored by Kajima Corporation, Okinawa Digital Vision, YKK AP FACADE, and several other firms. This year, close to 300 students participated; the task was to design buildings in the densely populated area of a city. As a result of this competition, Team “345” won a trip to Japan to see BIM in practice. In addition, the 2nd and 3rd place winners of the competition won internships with the sponsoring companies. “Close to Open” by Team 345

The project’s main concept is the transformation of residential buildings located between the highway and the railroad in the space of 11m x 18.5m. The project includes a buffer zone around the buildings in order to absorb the heat and the noise as well as for natural ventilation and crime prevention. Furthermore, the team considered the preservation of the traditional Vietnamese life style.

Second place:
“Fill in the Blank” by The 94s

The location was specific to the most famous and crowded area of “Foreign Town” in Saigon where a lot of foreign tourists gather in the evenings. The concept is to expand the usable area by building a walkway above the ground.

Third place:
“Space between Boxes” by BTT

In order to solve the growing needs of student accommodation for Ho Chin Minh University, the team designed modular construction residences using containers.
